NEW PROGRAMMES DIRECTOR AT SCRIPT

We are delighted to announce that our new Programmes Director is Sibyl Ruth.  Sibyl was previously the Literature Programmer at MAC (Midlands Arts Centre) and is a writer.  She starts her new post with Script on 1st February.

INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING COURSE TO RUN AT WARWICK ARTS CENTRE

This in-depth course offers the definitve introduction to writing the short screenplay. So if you are interested in writing for the screen, put the following dates in your diary:

On 22/29 April and 6/13 May (all Saturdays) the course will be running at Warwick Arts Centre.

GRANT SUCCESS FOR SMALL SCREEN VISIONS WRITER

One of the writers who completed our Small Screen Visions training programme last year has been awarded a lottery grant by Screen West Midlands.  The grant will enable Helen Cross to further develop the screenplay that she wrote as part of the Script initiative.  Her small Screen Visions mentor, Claire Ingham, will now work as script editor as part of this award.

WRITERS' GROUP - POSTSCRIPT

Postcript is a writing for performance group that meets fortnightly on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of every month at the Old Joint Stock. Temple Row, Birmingham from 7:30pm until closing.  Everyone welcome whether they want encouragement, script development, something fine tuned or just a natter.

Although a script-based group, actors, directors, producers, film-makers and other interested parties are welcome.  The group is for anyone interested in writing for perfromacne whether writing it, performing it, producing it or all three.

HAT TRICK LOOKING FOR WRITERS AT NEW NORTHERN BRANCH

Television production Company Hat Trick seek links with new and experienced writers.

Hat Trick have recently set up offices in Manchester and want to forge links with new and experienced writers from across the North who are looking to write for television.

They are looking for full scripts (sitcom and one-off 50 minute dramas) and will provide feedback within 12 weeks.

SCREEN FORUM: SHOOT THE WRITERS

Thursday 16th February, 7- 9:45pm Light House, Wolverhampton

The Forum is a regular meeting of practitioners and agencies who are involved in screen based creative industries within the region.  This evening's forum will focus on getting scripts commissioned and produced and working as a professional writer in the region.

The programme will include 2 panels chaired by Peggy Paterson, Managing Director at Script.

The aim of the Screen Forum is to showcase work from the region and to facillitate networking, collaboration and the sharing of information and resources.  Screen Forum is interested in hearing from practitioners who would like to showcase work and/or programme a meeting.

ANOKHEPIX LTD. SEEKS SCREENWRITER

Anokhepix Ltd are looking for a screenwriter with a background in Indian cinema.

A screenplay writer who has a background in Indian cinema, preferably experience in comedy writing: the writer will be working on a project intended to film in mid-March 2006. 

It is a paid job and the amount will be discussed based upon the writer's experience and resources.

SHORT FILM SCHEME FOR BLACK FILM-MAKERS

Oportunities for black writers...

Blank Slate, a new fund set up by the UK Film Council and the media arts production network b3 Media, will give black and ethnic minority writers the opportunity to put their ideas forward on film.   Eight short films are expected to be commissioned in the near future in conjunction with the fund.  

Filmmakers can apply to make digital short films up to 10 minutes with a budget of up to £9000.  The production of the shorts will be completed by Spring 06.

STAGE...

CUED UP PLAYWRITING COMPETITION

Aspiring playwrights are being given the chance to see their work performed at Sheffield's award winning theatre The Crucible.  The Off the Shelf Festival of Writing and Reading in Sheffield are working in collaboration with Sheffield Theatres and with sponsorship from hlw solicitors to organise this exciting competition which will be judged by the Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres Samuel West.  The winner and runner-up will have thier work performed in a rehearsed reading in the Crucible Studio Theatre in 2006. 

Anyone interested in entering needs to hurry as the closing date is 28th Februrary.

BRUNTWOOD PLAYWRITING COMPETITION

The Royal Exchange Theatre has launched a National Playwriting Competition, for original, full-length stage plays that have not been previously perfomed.

Writers must be over the age of 18 and a resident of the UK or Ireland to enter, but can be of any level of professional experience. Anonymous selection allows both novices and professionals to compete alongside each other. The competition is open and inclusive to all.

This will be one of the most important competitions in British Theatre with major cash prizes and full-scale productions. The intention is to present productions of two winning entries at The Royal Exchange Theatre during the inaugural Manchester International Festival in 2007. Cash prizes total £45,000.

The judging panel includes actress Brenda Blethyn OBE, actor and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah and National Theatre Artistic Director Nicholas Hytner.

FORTRESS PRODUCTIONS SEEKS NEW WRITING

Fortress Productions is an up and coming theatre company with the aim of bringing leading female roles to the forefront of theatre with new writing.  They have already produced two successful plays, which were performed in leading north London fringe venues. 

They are always on the lookout for writers who are eager to have thier ideas come to life and are now looking for scriptwriters to collaborate with for future projects.  They would not rule out producing work already written, provided it fits their criteria.

NEW THEATRE COMPANY SEEKS UNPERFORMED FULL-LENGTH PLAYS

MOMENTUM YOUNG WRITERS FESTIVAL 2006

Theatre Writing Partnership is looking for promising young writers aged 16 to 25 to submit plays for our next Momentum Young Writers' festival.

Plays must be no longer than 45 minutes and possible to perform with no more than three actors.  In the lead-up to 31st March there will be young writers groups in Leicester, Northampton and Nottingham.

TRANSLATION

Translation, The Journey Out is a one day discussion event between theatre practitioners and those who work, or are interested in the translation of plays into other languages for presentation overseas.

Guest speakers from the UK and abroad will lead this exploration with a particular focus on how plays make this journey out.  As well as presentations, there will be breakout gropups with lots of opportunities to develop greater opportunities for playwrights to be presented in other languages.

The day runs from 10.00 - 17.00 and tickets cost £25 and include lunch and wine reception.
