CALLING
ALL WRITERS' GROUPS IN THE WEST MIDLANDS
Script
to offer free training...
Are
you a member of a dramatic writers' group that
meets regularly? Would your group members benefit
from training or mentoring?
Recognising
that writers' groups play an invaluable part in
supporting and developing writers, Script is offering
the opportunity for groups to assess their own
training needs and to apply to Script for a series
of sessions for the benefit of their members.
The training will be absolutely free and will
be undertaken by experienced industry practitioners.
Up to four groups will be awarded the training.
The awards will be made on the basis of demonstrable
consultation within the group, a desire to attract
new members, and the effectiveness of the training
proposed.
Applications
will only be accepted from groups which:
(a)
Have a written statement of purpose
(b)
Meet regularly and have at least 10 members
(c)
Are open to new members
(d)
Have a remit for dramatic writing i.e. writing
for screen, radio or stage

OUR
PROGRAMMES DIRECTOR IS LEAVING

to take up the position of Director at The Roses
Theatre, Tewkesbury.

DRAMA FOR BBC ONE
Short
notice on this one but a great opportunity...
From
Summer 2006, the BBC hopes to transmit 6 x 60-minute
plays on BBC ONE.
This
opportunity will give six new writers the chance
to have their original and authored work broadcast
to a primetime audience. They want a good mix
of writers, and this can include writers who are
completely new to television.

pitch supported by a sixty minute original screenplay

NETWORK - THE BBC'S SHORT FILM SHOWCASE
Film
Network screens short films from new British Filmmakers,
with four new shorts every week.
The
site also provides filmmakers with tools to create
online profiles and exchange tips, advice and
ideas and allows audiences to comment on and rate
the films. It also provides links to all the great
online resources that already exist through the
Filmmakers Guide.

STAGE...
BRUNTWOOD
PLAYWRITING COMPETITION
The
Royal Exchange Theatre has launched a National
Playwriting Competition, for original, full-length
stage plays that have not been previously perfomed.
Writers
must be over the age of 18 and a resident of the
UK or Ireland to enter, but can be of any level
of professional experience. Anonymous selection
allows both novices and professionals to compete
alongside each other. The competition is open
and inclusive to all.
This
will be one of the most important competitions
in British Theatre with major cash prizes and
full-scale productions. The intention is to present
productions of two winning entries at The Royal
Exchange Theatre during the inaugural Manchester
International Festival in 2007. Cash prizes total
£45,000.
The
judging panel includes actress Brenda Blethyn
OBE, actor and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah and
National Theatre Artistic Director Nicholas Hytner.

JOHN WHITING AWARD
This
award is intended to help further the careers
and enhance the reputations of British Playwrights
and to draw to public attention the importance
of writers in contemporary theatre.
A
panel of independent judges will take the decision.
The award is made to the writer whose play, in
the judges' opinion, most nearly satisfies the
following description:
(a)
a play in which the writing is of special quality
(b)
a play of relevance and importance to contemporary
life
(c)
a play of potential value to British theatre
The
value of the award is £6000. Only writers
who meet specific criteria are eligible to enter.

DRAMA
ASSOCIATION OF WALES - ONE ACT PLAYWRITING COMPETITION
This
competition aims to encourage the writing of plays
for amateur theatre in English and Welsh.
For
2006, the are looking for plays in two categories:
an open category and plays suitable for performance
by a cast of 16-25 year olds.
The
winning play in each category will receive a cash
prize of £250 and will be published by DAW
Publications.
The
plays must have a mimimum running time of 20-50
minutes and have a minimum cast of 2.

THE
THEATRE TRAIL
Drip
Action Theatre is launching its annual theatre
trail competition for 2006. The competition is
looking for six new one-act plays to be performed
as part of next year's Arundel Festival.
The
theatre trail consists of a series of one-act
plays performed every day, throughout the day
at different locations all over Arundel with theatregoers
being able to walk from one venue to another.
Writers
of all abilities and experience are encouraged
to enter. The judges will select three plays for
performance with one overall winner taking home
the Joy Goun Award of £100.
The
theme can be any genre as long as it has a realistically
sized cast and can be staged simply with minimum
scnery and props. You play should be 30-40 minutes
in length and suitable for daytime performance.

WHAT
IS MISSING FROM YOUR LIFE? BBC RADIO 4
Men
of Birmingham! BBC Radio 4 want you to contact
them. They wish to weave a drama around your lives.
They
would like you to answer this question: 'What
is missing from your life?' Some of the replies
they receive will form part of a drama documentary.
Your
answer can be about anything you like and as long
or short as you feel necessary. Some answers will
be recorded (either by the author or an actor)
and the drama weaved around them.
If
you are interested in participating in this project,
they require your answers by email or letter as
soon as possible. Please include your name and
a contact number or address. All replies will
be treated confidentially and handled only by
Radio 4. Answers will be treated with care and
respect and it will be possible for contributors
to the final programme to remain anonymous.

'CRUSH'
PREMIERE
Richard
Parkes' play 'Crush' will be given its professional
premiere at the Newhampton Arts Centre in Wolverhampton

WELL' BY SIMON ANDREW STIRLING
'Mompesson's
Well' is an original, wickedly funny and

THEATRE OF THE AETHER AND 93 FM PRESENT TRAVESTY
THEATRE'S PRODUCTION OF 'BABALON - A FABLE OF
ROCKETRY, SEX AND HIGH MAGICK' BY PAUL GREEN
Herefordshire
based writer, Paul Green has written a play about
the mysterious death of Jack Parsons (1914-52).
Parsons was a pioneering AMerican rocket scientist,
disciple of the magus Aleister Crowley and passionate
devotee of Lady Babalon, the Scarlet Woman of
the New Aeon.
The
performance is on Friday 16 December at 8pm in
the Gielgud Studio Theatre at RADA, Malet Street,
London WC1.
