SCRIPT /LIGHT HOUSE NOMINATION FOR RTS AWARD

Script and Light House Media Centre have been nominated for the prestigious Royal Television Society Best Corporate/non Broadcast Award for the short film "Cathy & I" written by Ashok Patel and directed by Ekta Walia.

Script teamed up with the Light House Media Centre, Wolverhampton, to make short films in early 2005 as part of the Leap Off The Page scheme.

This scheme was initiated by Script in 2004 to give writers from culturally diverse backgrounds the chance to develop their writing skills for screen drama.

After six months of development, three writers were selected to have their screenplays produced by Light House. The films were launched there in April 2005 and have since been screened at MAC, in Birmingham, and will be shown at Birmingham Arts Fest this month.

"Cathy & I" is the story of Jayaben, an elderly woman, and the impact her dementia has on her family and friends, until a new and surprising friendship offers her hope.

Writer Ashok Patel is a research fellow at Birmingham University, specialising in Genetics, in particular Type 1 Diabetes. He has been writing for five years and has had a short play produced and toured around the UK as well as a radio play produced by BBC Radio 4.

Director Ekta Walia has produced a short regional film for Carlton, worked for Maverick Television and several independent companies in Birmingham.

The winners of the RTS awards will be announced at an Awards Dinner at the ICC on October 8 2005.

The Lighthouse Digital Shorts will be shown at ArtsFest in the Library Theatre, Birmingham , on 11 September 2005 from 8pm.

For more information see the artsfest website.

NARRATIVE NOW AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY

Oxford University present a day-school entitled Fact Versus Fiction In Contemporary Culture.

"In today's culture is it possible to be original any more? Everywhere you turn, traditional narrative has been taken over by other forms. Television has been colonised by the Drama Documentary and Reality TV, literature by the rise of faction and creative non-fiction, music by endless sampling and the cult of personality. Over all this looms the internet, where new technology creates the myth of community, whilst reinforcing the increasing fragmentation of our lives."

If this is a statement you relate to as a writer then you may wish to join this day school as it brings together academics and practitioners to discuss the problems and possibilities created by the blurring of boundaries in the modern media.
